Most basements are not really finished. They will just look empty. Nothing at all. So when you decide to renovate it or simply just finish your basement, here are some things you need to do.

  1. Place the studs. These are the beams which make up the skeleton of your walls. You should plan ahead to know where you want all of your walls to go, in which it should have been done already in your building phase. 2 main materials from which you can make your studs, steel or wood.
  2. Finish your walls and add drywall. Once your walls have skeleton they’ll need a skin. Install drywall or use whatever wall finishing method you prefer to get nice walls which you can paint when the project is complete.
  3. Finish your ceiling. After you’ve put drywall or other finishing materials to your ceiling, this will give you nice surface to paint or finish your preferred method.
  4. Consider keeping your concrete floors. You can save money only by keeping your concrete floors and having them bare. Yes, this may be cold, but consider it. Concrete floors can be stained to achieve really cool finishes, giving you a modern look.
  5. Install carpet onto the concrete or build a subfloor. You will need to have a plan on what flooring method is best for you. Installing a subfloor will make for a warmer floor than just installing carpet but it may take away badly needed inches in terms of height, as well as adding to the overall project cost.
  6. Add doors. If you plan to add rooms in your new space, you may also want to add doors. This are important especially for bathrooms and bedrooms.
